Editorial standards

Who writes this

Every article carries the name of the person who wrote it, and that name links to their page: their biography and everything else they have published here. Nothing runs unattributed. Where a piece draws on a wire report, a federation release or another publication’s reporting, we say so in the text and link to it.

Accuracy and sourcing

Results, times and margins come from the official record — the organising body’s results service — and we say when a result is provisional, under appeal or subject to a jury decision. Where we describe what happened on the water, we describe what we or a named source saw. Where we are inferring, we say we are inferring.

We do not publish rumours as fact. A story built on a single unnamed source is labelled as such, and we would rather be second and right than first and wrong.

Corrections

Once a piece is published it is a matter of record. It is not quietly rewritten: when we get something wrong we fix it and say that we have, on the article itself, with the date. Typographical fixes are made silently; anything that changes the meaning of a sentence gets a note.

If you have spotted a mistake, tell us at corrections@catchrowing.news and we will look at it. Please include the URL and, if you can, a link to the record that shows the correct version.

Predictions

Our prediction boards are editorial opinion. They are not statements of fact, not advice, and not betting guidance — the terms say so at greater length. What makes them worth publishing is that we keep score in public: once a race is rowed, every call on the board is marked right or wrong and stays on the page. We do not revise a prediction after the result is known.

Independence, ownership and funding

Catch Rowing is independently owned and published. It is not owned, funded or directed by a governing body, a club, or a regatta organiser, and no outside party sees an article before it is published.

There is no paywall and no advertising network on this site. Reading requires no account. If we ever run sponsored or partnered material, it will be labelled as such on the page and it will not be written by the newsroom — and no commercial arrangement, present or future, buys favourable coverage or the removal of a story.

Conflicts of interest

Rowing is a small sport and the people who write about it row in it, coach in it and know the people in it. That is what makes the reporting worth reading, and it is also the risk. Where a writer has a material connection to a crew, club or person central to a story — a current or recent affiliation, a family tie — it is disclosed in the piece or the piece goes to someone else.

How we use AI

Editorial judgement, reporting and the words you read are the work of the person in the byline. Software helps with the mechanical parts of publishing — spelling, formatting, suggesting a headline to choose between — and no article is published without a named human editor reading it and standing behind it.

Privacy and your data

Analytics runs only if you agree to it, and the privacy policy sets out exactly what is collected, which is very little. Sources who write to us in confidence are treated in confidence.
